چکیده

Measuring the thermal conductivity of sub-surface buried substrates is significant practical interests. However, this remains challenging with traditional pump–probe spectroscopies due to their limited penetration depths. Here, we experimentally and numerically investigate TPD recently developed optical technique steady-state thermoreflectance (SSTR) explore its capability for measuring properties substrates. The conventional definition (i.e., depth at which temperature drops 1/e value maximum surface temperature) does not truly represent upper limit how far beneath SSTR can probe. For estimating uncertainty measurements a substrate priori, sensitivity calculations provide best means. Thus, detailed are provided guide future measurements. Due nature SSTR, it measure that traditionally by transient techniques, exemplified three control samples. We also discuss required criteria isolate film. Our study establishes as suitable characterizations in typical device geometries.

Thermal Conductivity of Magnesium Oxide From Absolute, Steady-State Measurements

The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline magnesium oxide has been measured over the temperature range from 400 K to 1300 K using a modified guarded-hot-plate design. Three different thicknesses of specimens having 93 % of theoretical density were tested to verify the operation, accuracy, and reproducibility of our apparatus. The measured thermal conductivity ranges from 30 W · m-1 · K-1 down...

Absolute Steady-State Thermal Conductivity Measurements by Use of a Transient Hot-Wire System

A transient hot-wire apparatus was used to measure the thermal conductivity of argon with both steady-state and transient methods. The effects of wire diameter, eccentricity of the wire in the cavity, axial conduction, and natural convection were accounted for in the analysis of the steady-state measurements. Based on measurements on argon, the relative uncertainty at the 95 % level of confiden...

Analytical interpretation of nondiffusive phonon transport in thermoreflectance thermal conductivity measurements

We derive an analytical solution to the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) to relate nondiffusive thermal conductivity measurements by thermoreflectance techniques to the bulk thermal conductivity accumulation function, which quantifies cumulative contributions to thermal conductivity from different mean free path energy carriers (here, phonons). Our solution incorporates two experimentally def...

In this paper we will discuss the application of the thermoreflectance method for real time sub-micron thermal imaging. By using light in the visible spectrum, the diffract...

Thermal Boundary Resistance Measurements Using a Transient Thermoreflectance Technique

A transient thermoreflectance technique, using a 200-fs laser pulse, is demonstrated as a nondestructive method for measuring the thermal boundary resistance between a thin metallic film and dielectric substrate. Experimental results are presented for Au deposited on silicon and silicon dioxide substrates taken at room temperature and compared to a thermal model. The relevant thermal properties...
